Your peer group is everything. When you're competing shoulder-to-shoulder with other Players, it naturally raises the level of your game.

In my very first NFL game, I had to guard a guy who had just won an Olympic gold medal in the 4x100m relay. In other words, he was one of the four fastest men in the WORLD.

Do you think I ran a little faster that day? You bet I did.

10+ years ago, I was giving a talk at MIT, and I made an unexpected connection that would change the direction of my business.

Even though I was supposed to stand behind a podium for the talk, I still owned the space and gave it my all (as usual).

This guy came up to me afterward. Actually, he looked like a 16-year-old kid.

He said to me, “Hey, can you teach me to do that? Talk like that? Build a story like that?”

I didn't realize it then, but this “kid” would inspire me to write my first book. And I'd show him how to become the kind of speaker who owns the room.

We had a great conversation recently, and I'm going to share it with you this week. Watch the video to hear us discuss:

  • The misguided idea that's stealing our ambitions—and those of our children.
  • Why the path to a gold medal is actually about humility (contrary to most people's beliefs)!
  • The greatest antidote to aimlessness and restlessness.
