“How did you get here?”
“Where did you get the idea for your business?”
“Tell everyone about your path up to this point.“
Almost every podcast guest answers some form of this question.
Because of who I am and what I do, when I hear the host ask a question like this, what I really hear is:
“Tell me your story.“
(By the way, if you're one of those people wondering exactly where
you can tell your personal story, here's one possibility!)
> Some guests hit this question out of the park.
> But most people go on a long, rambling narrative that they hope will establish their authority and credibility. But, really, all it does is make people tune out.
Ask yourself, right now: If you got booked on your dream podcast (or interview!)—an opportunity that could put yourself in front of thousands of ideal clients—would you know how to give an answer that would:
- Create an instant connection with the audience?
- Turn those casual listeners into raving fans in less than 30 seconds?
That's the power of your personal story.
Want a Few Examples?
Think about the stories I've shared in the last few weeks:
When you hear a story like theirs, you sit up and pay attention. You're truly ready to listen to what they have to say. It's a game-changer.
That's why story is one of the fastest ways to build your business. Once you've dialed in your personal story, you'll be absolutely unstoppable in front of every audience you speak to.
Want to Put Together a Powerful Story of Your Own?
That's what we do at Personal Story Power. We uncover a defining moment in your life, and we help you turn it into a powerful story that grabs your audience's attention and won't let go. That story becomes the connective tissue that creates instant trust, which opens the doors to all kinds of new opportunities—including scaling your business.
Don't Have an Invite to Speak on a Podcast Yet?
You don't need to wait for an invitation.
Go Live on your own social media platform. That's how Dani got started. She started telling her story on Instagram Live, and her business started to scale—fast—as she reached the people who connected with her message.
Going live on social media is a great, low-cost way to start putting yourself out there and practice your story.
You can also create your own in-person platforms. Some of my clients hold dinner seminars where they tell their story to their ideal clients.
That's the beauty of creating and owning your personal story: You get to write your own ticket in life. You get to decide what's next for you.
Then, as you continue to get out there and get more exposure (and traction!), you'll get opportunities to speak on other platforms, like podcasts and virtual summits.
And when that question comes your way—”How did you get here?”—you'll be perfectly positioned to knock it out of the park.
