One of my coaches told me something that surprised the heck out of me a few years ago. Now, I know this might be a little controversial, but it’s important, so I want to share it with you:

“You need to contribute with your dark side.”

I was a little confused at first.

Then he clarified: At the time, I was trying to be popular. I was trying to be the “nice guy,” but that wasn’t getting things done.

To be more effective, I needed to access my dark side.

When I originally uncovered this concept, I thought back to my NFL career, and it all made sense. The Oilers didn’t pay for my light side. They paid for my dark side.

So now I ask you:

  • Do you want to be nice? And popular?
  • Or do you want to be effective?

Accessing your dark side will help you move that needle.
